Still turkey-free November 30, 2008

For planning on spending the holiday alone, we’ve certainly put in our share of family time this weekend as well. I’m not complaining – it was a lot of fun. A good thing for me is an equal balance of alone time and social time and that’s what this weekend was.

His dad, new stepmom, new stepbrother, half brother and sister-in-law descended upon our house yesterday afternoon. I was one prepared little housewife, with appetizers, a dessert and two farking awesome dishes I’d prepared ahead of time – homemade mac & cheese and sausage stuffing. DEER sausage stuffing, even! If I ever doubted my ability to turn into a good southern cook, my fears are now over. The only things left to conquer are biscuits and gravy and I don’t think that’ll ever happen. Our arteries are the better for it anyway.

It was cute to see his dad and Melissa all married now. They’re almost shy about it, which is funny. They’ve been together a long time, so not much has changed as far as their day-to-day life, but having gone straight from cohabitation to married myself, I know it does feel a little different. I didn’t think it would – I even said when we got married the only thing that would change would be we’d now have a matching set of dishes, but I was wrong. There is something about referring to your man as “My husband” instead of “My boyfriend,” which I always wondered if it made Melissa feel weird being in her 50’s and referring to him that way. I know she’s been wanting them to be married for awhile, so I’m glad for her. And for him – he finally relinquished his bachelorhood after twenty-five years and seems really happy.

Her ring did not disappoint either, as I knew it wouldn’t. Sparkly. Shiny. Oooh.

My sister-in-law, the one I’m on the fence about, was pretty cool yesterday, except for one minor story. We girls decided to take advantage of the break in the rain and took a walk around the neighborhood. We were all talking about how we met our respective men – I met Brian at a bar, haha, Melissa met Bruce on a group ski trip through mutual friends, cool and then came Toni. She met Bruce, Jr. also in a bar while they both were living here in Columbia going to school. That was cool. The part that wasn’t cool was that he’d had a serious live-in girlfriend at the time, who he unceremoniously dumped shortly after meeting Toni. I guess it worked out okay since they’re still together and happy (I hope) after all these years, but she seemed a little too, I don’t know, proud? of the fact he could not resist her wily charms and beauty and broke up with a perfectly nice girl. Her phrasing. She said, “Yeah, they were perfectly happy together and she did everything for him, but once he met me, that was all she wrote.”

Hmm.

My indecision about her continues.

I’m glad everyone is happy and it is cute that they are being all coy about it.

John used to introduce me as his wife even though we only lived together. I hated it and had asked him countless times not to do it. But he said he liked the way it sounded and that it was the way he felt. (I guess the cheating made me not believe him so very much.)

The first time I heard Brian refer to me as his wife, I nearly keeled over. Sometimes it still makes me giggle and it’s been almost ten years. But then again, I’m a weirdo.

I am always looking for a reason not to like someone and this would be enough for me. What is her NEXT conquest…hmmmm?

I’m not sure she’ll ever have a next conquest and I’m kind of sad about that.
